Earlier this month I attended the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) in Pasadena, California with my oldest daughter. Here are some things that I learned or was reminded of while I was there.
1. The most obvious; the current exchange rate truly is painful and driving in the Los Angeles area is both frustrating and potentially hazardous to your physical well-being.
2. Whatever your ‘thing’ is; fly-fishing, golf, and make up apparently, you can spend a lot of money on it. (Who knew you could pay that much for lipstick and eye shadow?!)
3. The amount of detailed work and effort that went into the make up for the Star Trek Beyond movie was truly impressive.
4. There are really only three skin colours; beige, tan, and brown and we all fall on that spectrum somewhere.
5. For a person of darker complexion if you add a little bit of ochre to whatever product you are applying it takes away from the ashen look that can often occur.
6. And most importantly, and the primary reason for this comment, I was reminded of just how great it is when you love what you do for a living. Make up is not my thing, but it is my daughter’s. She works at MAC Cosmetics and one of her dreams is to work in theatre make-up application. It was fun to watch how excited she got meeting established professionals who have won academy awards and those whom she follows on social media. It was good to see her taking notes during the presentations and talking to others about their choices in products. And it was encouraging to be reminded of just how much she loves what she does.
Many of you have heard me say this before, but it bears repeating. Work can be challenging and not every task that is required by our job or profession may be our favourite thing to do; but at the end of the day, if we have a passion for what we do, it is a tremendous thing.
